Our main goal could not be clearer than our mission statement written in our charity registration namely…’ To Protect and Save lives in Bigbury Bay and the surrounding Coastline’. You will know from other parts of this website that there has been a Lifeboat operating from Hope Cove for three centuries, but our newly formed Limited Company, with charitable status, has only just taken on this important mantle. The Company is administered and operated entirely by volunteers. There is an eclectic mix of skills amongst the ‘trustees’, who are from both the locality and further afield, but all having a special affinity for, and empathy with this special part of Devon. At the ‘sharp end’ are the crew, all having a wealth of seafaring experience and being trained to the highest standards.
Our aim is to be are on call 24/7, 365 days a year, and in addition to operating on our own, we liaise regularly, both whilst involved in training exercises, and during incidents, with other services including The RNLI, Beach Lifeguards and military based search and rescue teams.
However, as a Company, we cannot function without financial backing for essentials such as boat maintenance, protective equipment for the crew, radio electronic communication systems, training, insurance and the many other requirements for working as safely as possible at sea during, more than likely, potentially dangerous situations. Consequently the goal of the vibrant Fund raising committee is to raise monies through a variety of ways. It has achieved much so far, and with your help, will continue to do so.
A wide range of the general public will benefit from the presence of the Lifeboat. Not just the community of Hope Cove, nor the greater population that dwell in the many settlement bordering the shoreline of Bigbury Bay. There are many regular visitors, and holiday home owners who spend as much time as possible in this beautiful part of England, enjoying not just the spectacular scenery and relaxed way of life, but the many opportunities for aquatic activities. For example at any one day during the busy Summer months, there can be as many as 200 craft moored or berthed at Hope Cove, not to mention surfers, windsurfers, canoeists, kayakers, divers and swimmers based at others resorts dotted around the coastline of the Bay.
Our goal is to make all of these personnel feel ‘part of the Lifeboat’. It is there for them, and conversely we hope they will all feel activated to support it. As a ‘young’ Company we are always grateful for ideas as to how we might increase our influx of funds and everybody is always welcome at any of our fundraising events or to make a donation through one of the many ways outlined, by our fundraising team, in other parts of this web site. As a registered charity your donation can be gift aided, and this, along with the many events organised throughout the year will help to perpetuate the longevity of our service. Further details can be obtained by visiting other areas of this website or better still, why not visit our lovely village and enjoy everything it offers.
